To be a supermodel is to be an entity larger than that of fashion plate: Lisa Fonssagrives, a Swede widely considered to be the very first of the type, is perhaps known as such because she leveraged her modelling streak of the 40s into a fashion-design career. The word has been bandied about since 1891, when painter Henry Stacy Marks rhapsodised about a certain variety of sitter: ‘The “super” model… goes in for theatrical effect always has an expression of “Ha! Ha! More blood…”’ With each person dubbed a ‘supermodel’ over the 75 years it took for the term to take hold, the profession took form. The magazine is published by the Magna Publishing Group, which was acquired by 1-800-PHONESEX on December 22, 2015.Not that they were the first to be termed ‘supermodels’. Over its 25-year run Margot Kidder, Ann-Margret and Barbra Streisand unsuccessfully attempted to sue the magazine after it published nude photos of them. The 10th Anniversary Issue of High Society, published May, 1986 featured Gail Thackray ( Gail Harris) with a 10-page spread, Centerfold and Front cover. Another venture was a celebrity focused publication, Celebrity Skin magazine, in 1986. In November 1981 a spin-off magazine, High Society Live!, debuted.
This evolved into the very first "phone sex" lines. Leonard, an adult film star, is credited with the use of " 900" and " 976 phone numbers" to advertise upcoming magazine issues. Carl Ruderman hired the adult industry's first female men's magazine editor, Gloria Leonard, in 1977. High Society was first published in May 1976.
